This little catalogue about Jamaican-Canadian artist Dionne Simpson's work is written in the first person perspective as curator Gary Michael Dault narrates his studio visit. As he tells the tale of this day, he cites his astonishment at the labour intensive and randomized nature of Simpson's creative process whilst a smiling Dionne Simpson states "I'm very patient with inanimate objects". Reading this insider perspective on the artist’s process allows for a deeper engagement with her work and also offers a chance to marvel at the layered interventions she makes on the canvas from cutting and pulling away strands of the cotton (a technique pulled from ancient African traditions), to the throwing, dipping and dabbing cycle of her underpaintings which involve dice, cotton swabs and tiny cups of ink.
